Mermaid by Miami Body Cast studio

There are different faces of taking care of the planet. Sometimes it's more than just a faces...
For example Miami Body Cast studio (from Florida I suppose) started a project "1000 Mermaids", which "aims to bring awareness to the growing problems affecting our natural reefs". They want to create concrete statues of mermaids and place them underwater, making some kind of attraction for tourists and enhance natural habitat of fishes.

Probably, we wouldn't be interested in it, unless the way the studio is doing it's job. Those statues of mermaids aren't all sculpted from the beginning or casted from same mold one by one. In order to create body of half woman-half fish, artists are using plaster molds taken from naked (or half-naked) models. And this is where our story begins...

Casting model's body must be a hard work, but of course someone has to do it. At least, it gives you back a lot of fun I guess...

As we can see, modelling requires patience... and endurance as the model is totally encased in plaster shell..

Of course 1000 Mermaids is not the only project MBC studio performs. They're making also other projects worth to look at. Finished pieces are looking astonishing, but of course we can't forget about behind the scenes pictures...
